If you asked someone to describe themselves, there is a good chance that they won't describe themselves as being evil, but many fail to understand that evilness is not a 100% or 0% thing. It can be hard to distinguish it, but evilness is not always a hard thing to spot,"...I want to begin with this wonderful illusion by [Dutch] artist M.C. Escher. If you look at it and focus on the white, what you see is a world full of angels. But let's look more deeply, and as we do, what appears is the demons, the devils in the world" (Zimbardo). Evilness is one of the main themes in The Crucible because not only does it center around witches, but because many of the characters make decisions that aren't with the best intentions. For example Abigail Williams, who keeps a good reputation around town all the while she puts innocent townspeople's lives in risk the whole time.Though many argue that her actions are a result of her being a bad person all around, the reality is, we can all do evil things depending on the situation we are in because it is apart of human nature. Zimbardo uses the analogy of Lucifer being kicked out of heaven and the becoming the "face of evil" and I related that back to Abigail who had similar events happen to her. She felt betrayed by John Proctor who she believed loved her and that caused her to do evil things. Her actions ultimately caused a chain reaction of drama, but it wouldn't be fair to label her to be a totally bad person, because evilness is solely dependent on the situations we are faced with.
